Discover Tonkatsu And Shabu-Shabu. Fukuya Black Pork

If you're in Kagoshima and craving a culinary experience that blends traditional Japanese flavors with a modern twist, Tonkatsu And Shabu-Shabu. Fukuya Black Pork is a must-visit. Located at 〒892-0843 Kagoshima, Sennichicho, 15−4 植田ビル 1F, this cozy diner brings the essence of Japanese comfort food straight to your table with its specialty dishes like tonkatsu and shabu-shabu, using premium black pork. Let’s dive into what makes this spot a standout.

From the moment you step inside, the ambiance sets the stage for an unforgettable dining experience. The minimalist yet welcoming interior makes it clear that the focus is on the food. A simple design with wood accents allows the dishes to take center stage. The atmosphere feels relaxed, perfect for everything from a casual lunch to an intimate dinner with friends or family.

Now, the real star here is the tonkatsu, a crispy, golden-brown pork cutlet that’s the perfect balance of crunch and tenderness. What sets this tonkatsu apart is the use of Fukuya's signature black pork. Known for its rich flavor and melt-in-your-mouth texture, the black pork adds an extra depth of taste that’s hard to find elsewhere. The pork is coated in a light, crispy batter, and when you cut into it, the juicy tenderness inside is a delightful surprise. It’s served with a tangy, savory sauce that complements the richness of the meat perfectly.

Equally impressive is their shabu-shabu, a Japanese hot pot dish that’s both flavorful and interactive. The thinly sliced Fukuya black pork is lightly swirled in a bubbling pot of broth until it reaches the ideal tenderness. The experience of cooking your own meat at the table adds a fun element to the meal, and the broth, made with a blend of spices and ingredients, infuses each slice of pork with a deep, aromatic flavor. Pair it with a selection of fresh vegetables, dipping sauces, and rice, and you’ve got a meal that’s both hearty and satisfying.

As for the menu, it’s thoughtfully crafted, offering a selection of dishes that showcase the versatility of black pork. Besides the tonkatsu and shabu-shabu, you’ll also find a range of other pork-based offerings that highlight the rich, savory flavors that Fukuya is known for. The chef’s ability to balance flavors and textures really shines through, creating dishes that are simple yet extraordinarily flavorful.

What’s particularly noteworthy is how well Fukuya's menu caters to different tastes. Whether you prefer a light, fresh salad to accompany your meal or a hearty serving of rice to soak up the savory broths, there’s something for everyone. And the restaurant’s dedication to quality ingredients means that every dish, from the smallest appetizer to the main course, is made with care.

Reviews from patrons consistently praise the quality of both the food and the service. Many note the friendly and attentive staff who are always eager to ensure your dining experience is top-notch. Some have mentioned how the team goes above and beyond, explaining the menu and offering helpful recommendations based on personal preferences. It’s the type of attention to detail that makes a visit to Fukuya feel special and personalized.

If you're wondering about pricing, the menu is fairly priced considering the quality of the food and the service. While it’s not the cheapest option in the area, the experience is certainly worth the investment. Plus, with the generous portions, you’ll definitely get your money’s worth.

In addition to the outstanding food, Fukuya offers a genuine taste of Kagoshima through its traditional cooking methods. The use of local ingredients, particularly the black pork, highlights the region's culinary heritage. This isn’t just a meal; it’s a chance to experience the true flavors of Kagoshima in a cozy, modern setting.

  • Great shabu shabu and tonkatsu restaurant. We were able to get a table without reservation at 7:30 PM with a short wait, but the restaurant was packed. I prefer the kurobuta pork due to better flavor while the chamiton was more fatty. Tonkatsu was very tender but the meat ball tonkatsu was just okay. Seems popular with both locals and foreigners.

  • Quite popular restaurant specializing in local pork dishes, pork cutlet and shabu dominate the menu. We had two different sets, one with fatty pork and the other with lean cut. The latter was very big portion of meat (400 g), so it was difficult to finish it all. Taste and flavor was good, meat was soft and tender. Place fills up rather quickly, so better to come early to avoid waiting for a seat.

  • I had been wanting to try this type of food here for a long time, and I think this place truly delivered. I had never tasted anything like it before—the portion was generous, and the waiter kindly walked me through how to season it step by step, so I could enjoy it the way it’s meant to be eaten. It made the meal feel intentional, almost like a small ritual. If you ever find yourself in Kagoshima, this is absolutely a place you need to visit. The atmosphere is quiet and calming; I went alone and felt perfectly at ease—comfortably present, in one of those rare solo dining moments that just feel right. I tried the set menu with the Chamiton pork, and since I didn’t want to miss out on the other cut, I also ordered the Kurobuta bite. Both were absolutely delicious. Even though I was so full by the end, I swear if they had placed another portion in front of me, I would have devoured it anyway—it was that good. The kind of meal that leaves you satisfied but still thinking, just one more bite…

  • I had a 6000¥ Shabu-shabu & Tonkatsu set menu, each dish from the appetizer to the dessert was carefully crafted and well presented, not to mention how amazing the taste was. The thickness of the black pork slices was just right, making the texture even better. The meatballs tonkatsu was impeccable, so juicy and crispy. Yuzu sorbet was a perfect ending for such a great meal. Besides, I can see from the open kitchen that the cooks were super organized. I strongly recommend this restaurant and will definitely come back again when I visit Kagoshima.

  • We were really hungry after the whole day walking and we passed by this place after hitting many closed restaurant. They were near closure but they let us in and we took the kurobuta Katsu set and a mix friend set, that meat was so juicy and crunchy crusted! Very nice side dishes too. They also have sauces, vinaigrette and kimchi on the table. We enjoyed this dinner a lot. Price are ok, the restaurant is fancy and the staff is helpful and kind. Very recommended

  • I ordered the set menu and added the kurobuta tonkatsu, which turned out to be the highlight of my trip—crispy, juicy, and full of flavor. The other menu items were just average, so I’d definitely recommend going straight for the kurobuta tonkatsu. Don’t forget to make a reservation in advance, as this restaurant accepts reservations only.

  • I came here during my visit to Kagoshima as I knew black pork was a staple here and this place had great reviews. I initially came around 2 but was turned away as they said they were closed for lunch (although it says until 2:30 online). I returned at the start of dinner. I ordered the high quality tonkatsu set and shabu shabu. The tonkatsu was delicious and tender with a very nice crisp on the outside, just how it should be. It came with a bowl of rice cooked perfectly and some cabbage with 2 dressing options. The set was very good when eaten together. The shabu shabu was also very tasty. The pot was cooked over charcoal and my order came with 2 appetizers, veggies, noodles, and dessert (yuzu sherbet). It was all very good and so is their kimchi. Nice comfortable ambiance inside. If you’re not familiar with eating this type of meal, I’d do some research ahead of time to make sure you know what to order and how to eat it. Otherwise, I’d definitely recommend this restaurant.
